Under AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, and API 1104, a valid Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and supporting Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) are mandatory before a single weld is made on any code-governed project. Without them, your work cannot be accepted — period.
A Welding Procedure Specification is a written document that provides direction to the welder for making production welds in accordance with applicable code requirements. It defines every essential variable — base metal, filler, preheat, interpass temp, position, and more.
A Procedure Qualification Record is the documented evidence that a WPS produces welds with the required mechanical properties. It records the actual welding data used during a test weld and the results of required mechanical testing — it is the proof behind the procedure.
